Winterising the pool: 15 Quick Questions on Winterising | ioT Pool

We have prepared 15 quick questions about the whole process of wintering. See all the answers to the most popular questions about when to winterize, duration, the best products to use in this process, among many other recurring questions from our customers.

1. What is the main reason for winterising a pool?

By winterising, you will protect your pool during the late autumn and the entire winter period. This prevents the appearance of limescale, the development of corrosion, bacteria or damage to walls and pipes due to ice or other formations of nature associated with the colder season.

2. What is the ideal minimum temperature for wintering the pool?

When the pool temperature reaches 15°C, it is time to winterise the pool. After this temperature the microorganisms stop developing in the pool.

3. What is passive wintering?

The process of stopping filtration, draining the pipes, lowering the water level and finally applying the winter cover to the pool is the passive wintering technique. This process is recommended if there is a high probability of the pool water freezing during the winter, with the outside temperature below 5°C.

4. What is active wintering?

Active wintering corresponds to the process of putting the pool to sleep, the filtration runs in winter mode every day for a minimum of 2 hours. The pool must be monitored when the temperature is around 0°C. This type of wintering is recommended if your water is not likely to freeze during winter, the outside temperature being above 5°C during winter.

5. Is it necessary to perform a shock treatment before wintering?

Yes, it is essential to perform a shock treatment so that all impurities in the water are completely eliminated. We suggest the product Chlorine Shock.

6. What is the ideal pH for winter storage?

The pH values should be between 7.2 and 7.4 to facilitate winter storage.

7. What is the purpose of the wintering product?

The wintering products act as a bactericide, preventing the appearance of algae, bacteria and fungi in the pool water. They also prevent the appearance of lime scale on the walls. The wintering product has a long-lasting effect and stabilizes the water throughout the winter, which makes it much easier to restart the pool in spring.

8. What products are needed for wintering?

The most commonly used and most effective products in the wintering process are chlorine boosters or dechlorinators and winterisers. For the shock treatment, we recommend Ecopool's Chlorine Shock or Dichloro CTX-250. As a wintering product, we recommend the Ivernet 6M winterer or the Iverliner product indicated for pools with salt treatment.

9. Is it also necessary to clean the filter?

It is essential to carefully clean the filter before disconnecting the entire hydraulic circuit of your pool.

10. My filter is made of sand, how can I clean it?

When the debris is not evacuated by simple washing with water, it must be eliminated by introducing a flocculant that will chemically strip the sand.

11. Is it very expensive to winterize the pool?

No. The wintering process has very controlled costs, besides the fact that by wintering the pool you will be saving on maintenance. You can follow all the steps for an effective wintering in our Winterizing Guide.

12. What maintenance is needed after wintering?

Adjust the pH value between 7.2 and 7.4, when chlorine stabilizes between 0.5 to 1.5 ppm. The use of products is very reduced during the winter, but the balance of the water remains fundamental.

13. How long does wintering take? Is it better to hire a technician?

Logically, this whole process is time consuming and very laborious, but it prolongs the useful life of your pool. If you have more financial resources, you can opt for an annual technical assistance contract. This way, your pool will always be ready and impeccable, giving you more free time for your family and your daily activities.

14. How long does wintering last?

As soon as the water temperature reaches values above 15ºC, prepare your pool for reactivation and the beginning of the season.

15. Can I choose not to winterise my pool?

You can choose not to winterize your pool, but in that case you should take into account the maintenance costs with the usual chemical products and the time spent for the regular treatment.
